Meet the team: Michael Kilumelume

Michael Kilumelume was raised in the SOS Children’s Village in Lusaka, Zambia—a formative experience that shaped his deep commitment to supporting youth from vulnerable backgrounds. He holds a Bachelor of Social Science (BSocSci) in Economics and Applied Statistics, a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) in Economics, and a Master of Commerce (MCom) in Economics from the University of Cape Town (UCT). Michael is currently completing his PhD in Economics at Stellenbosch University in South Africa while also working as a Data Developer with the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER).

Michael’s research focuses on labour markets and enterprise development, driven by a desire to create inclusive economic opportunities. Beyond his academic and professional pursuits, he is an avid marathon runner and a passionate sports enthusiast. He believes in the transformative power of sports, not just for physical fitness but for building resilience, confidence, and mental well-being.

Inspired by his journey, Michael is now a member of Yatilink, an NGO dedicated to helping orphaned youths successfully integrate into society, equipping them with the skills, networks, and confidence needed to thrive.
